Ellie was born in 1972 in New York, USA to mixed British / German parents. Since then Ellie has lived in the UK, France, Germany and now lives in Italy. She has travelled extensively in Asia and South America, experiences that she feels have undoubtedly inspired and influenced her artistic approach.
Ellie, who is self taught, specializes in bold, vibrant townscapes and has been particularly inspired by the beauty and luminosity of the sandstone of the Georgian architecture in Bath, Cheltenham and surrounding towns. Ellie's townscapes are generally composed using acrylic paints, applied with a palette knife, which by nature, allows for spontaneity and the building of layers, depth of colour and really captures the texture and tone of the stonework. The use of gold leaf and bold outlining are also features characteristic of Ellie's work.
Ellie and her partner moved with their horses and three dogs to France, before moving to live in Italy. Whilst in France Ellie was inspired by the prehistoric Cave Paintings found in the South West of the country. This latest collection of paintings are of her own horses in the familiar style of the cave paintings, many with the rich earthy colourings typical of the cave paintings. Her horses have a wonderful style and elegance, with obvious knowledge of form. Ellie has attracted a following from around the world, with her paintings found in many private collections.
